All About Travel

Travel seems to be back in full swing, and everyone I know has either a weekend getaway planned, weddings, or a postponed trip abroad that is finally coming up! I just got back from a wonderful trip to Italy and have more weekend trips and weddings this Spring & Summer on deck. Travel is so fun, but can sometimes be the point of stress or worry for some of my clients. Your fun adventures and memories shouldn’t take a back seat to any stress regarding food, or your lifestyle. Just like one week or weekend of eating ‘well’ won’t totally transform you, one weekend or week of indulgence and change of pace won’t totally derail you either! Although my daily routines don’t alter too much before traveling- the day before my travel day, I worked on upping my hydration. Traveling, particularly flying, can really dehydrate you and affect how you feel when you land. This can particularly affect your digestion. Since I have a hard time keeping up my water intake when traveling (hate having to use the restroom a lot on a plane!) I really work on this the day before I travel, and then once I land.

I’ll also pack an electrolyte or hydration packet with my, like LMNT, Cure, or Liquid IV to make sure I am effectively getting the most out of my water absorption. Once you land, making sure to rehydrate is key to helping you acclimate, and aiding in your body's digestive reset!

As well as amping up my hydration before I leave, I do try to prioritize a few well-rounded and nutritious meals the day or two before my trip begins. I love being able to fully enjoy whatever meal I am in the mood/ is presented when traveling! With that in mind, I feel a little better if the day or two before I travel I focus on adding in greens and vegetables with my meals, since often that is what is lacking on vacation! That way, I feel as though I am starting with my tank full and enjoy myself when away. I do also try to avoid anything that is very salty or high in sodium the day of travel, as some tend to already retain water when traveling.

I also try to prioritize a good workout the day before I leave! I can’t always fit one in the morning before travel ( I get a tad stressed with packing or will prioritize sleep if its a morning flight) but a good sweat the day before is great, as well as a gentle stretch once you arrive and are settled. It benefits your body to stretch out and move those muscles after sitting for extended periods.

When it comes to supplements when I travel, alongside my hydration sticks I pack magnesium and Liposomal Vitamin C when I travel! (LivOn labs or Pique tea Immune Support) just to add in immune support while on the go, and magnesium as a supplement that can help you relax at night, muscle recovery and digestion!

My clients and I are always working on ‘toolboxes’ that work for them the few days before and after they travel, and these are just a few examples but everyone is different. Coming soon- great snacks to pack or buy when traveling and how to feel great coming home from your trip!
